Fiberglass pools are nothing new. These types of pools have been around for nearly 50 years. Like plaster or vinyl pools, the surface of fiberglass pools can be affected by aggressive water quality. Over time, excess chlorine or low pH can discolor the fiberglass gel coat on the pool. However, the surface of a fiberglass pool does not usually corrode like stucco and does not form holes like a vinyl liner. Fiberglass pools do not offer certain forms of maintenance such as acid washing, surface recoating, and liner replacement, but still, require proper weekly chemical and cleaning maintenance to protect the gel coat finish. The following is a detailed description of the cleaning and maintenance methods for fiberglass pools.

Cleaning method

Most dirt and debris that sinks to the bottom of the fiberglass pool can be brushed in toward the main drain and will remain in the filter. Large amounts of dirt and debris should be removed manually or with a pool cleaner. Use a pool cleaner suitable for fiberglass pools. When working with fiberglass pool surfaces, it is best to use softer cleaning tools that are made for vinyl pools. You can use a vacuum head with wheels, but do not use steel brushes, but only nylon or plastic brushes.

Acid cleaning fiberglass pools is not recommended and is not very effective. Fiberglass pools are very resistant to staining due to their ceramic-like appearance. If you encounter berry stains or leaf stains, clean the pool, balance the water volume, and shock the pool while filtering. Brush the area where the stain persists and sprinkle some chlorine pool shock or no stain (ascorbic acid) over the stained area. Most stain removers are safe to use on fiberglass pools, but be sure to read the label. Remember not to scrub hard with anything that might scratch or rub off the gel coat surface.

Maintenance methods

Afiberglass pool is said to be in equilibrium when tests show pH, total alkalinity, and calcium hardness to be within range. Balanced water will be clean, clear, blue, and shiny, and will also reduce eye and skin irritation, and extend the life of the fiberglass water treatment equipment and gel coat surface. Balanced water will improve sanitation and reduce or eliminate the need to add expensive water chemical supplements. Prolonged inappropriate water chemistry and higher levels of disinfection can lead to fiberglass water treatment equipment and Gelcoat damage that may not be covered by your fiberglass pool warranty. Test your water weekly and add conditioners to keep the water balanced and sanitized. This is the first thing you need to do to protect the surface of your fiberglass pool.

Therefore, choosing a fiberglass pool will provide your family with the enjoyment of living in it, plus it will make your yard more beautiful.
