Types of Molds for Carbon Fiber Product Manufacturing

Publish Time: 2025-03-18     Origin: Site

1. Wooden Molds

Wooden molds are made from carefully selected wood based on the size and shape of the desired product. The wood is cut and processed accordingly, sometimes using a milling machine. Additionally, a layer of butter putty is applied to achieve a smooth surface. This type of mold was widely used in the past but has now become rare, especially in carbon fiber manufacturing, due to its limitations in precision and durability.

2. Substitute Wood Molds

Originally, many molds were made of wood, but later, non-wood materials, such as resin-based molds, were introduced as alternatives. Resin molds offer a high level of surface smoothness and are easier to process for precise dimensions. However, in carbon fiber manufacturing, these molds are not widely used because carbon fiber itself contains resin. During high-temperature curing, resin can degrade, leading to inaccuracies. As a result, substitute wood molds are primarily used for prototype testing rather than mass production.

3. Clay Molds

Clay molds are similar in composition to materials used for bricks, pottery, and ceramic products. Initially, they were widely applied in automotive body design. In their raw state, clay molds can be finely sculpted at room temperature, and once cured at high temperatures, they become extremely hard. For molding purposes, foam can be applied to the surface to improve smoothness. However, despite their hardness, clay molds are brittle and prone to breakage, making them unsuitable for high-precision or large-scale production.

4. Metal Molds

Metal molds are the most commonly used molds for carbon fiber production today. These molds have a high manufacturing cost but offer superior durability. Typically, aluminum and steel are used, with steel molds being preferred for large-sized products. Steel molds provide excellent strength, ensuring the carbon fiber product maintains its intended shape and flatness. This is particularly important for large carbon fiber components. Additionally, metal molds have a high reuse rate, making them ideal for mass production.

Conclusion

These are some of the primary types of molds used in carbon fiber manufacturing. Hunan Ruimon New Material specializes in custom carbon fiber product manufacturing, starting with sample production before moving to mass production.
